There was a time in my life, a few years back, when I was so out of control with food, I didn't know what in the world to do.

I remember, after an evening's binge, hoisting myself off the couch (it's not easy to lift your body up with 215 pounds on it), and stumbling into the bathroom, looking at my beefy face in the mirror, and sobbing, "Why? Why can't I stop? WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME? I AM OUT OF CONTROL! HELP ME!"

Then crawling to bed, sick and fuzzy and in a thick, overstuffed stupor (I call it a food coma), falling asleep on a pillow soggy with tears, and waking the next morning, afraid, afraid to look at my repulsive body in the bathtub, afraid my clothes won't fit when I get dressed, afraid my pantyhose will roll right off me in public (it almost happened), afraid I'll run into someone I know on my way to work, someone who knew me when I was smaller, afraid this could go on for the rest of my life.
I wanted to run far away from them, from being in public. There I was displaying my gluttony, right there for everyone to see! It was as if I had a flashing sign around my neck, "Miss Piggy. Binges Every Night. Can't Control Herself. Bad Person. Worthless."

I HATED the way I looked. I was so embarrassed to go out. I remember, every time I went to the grocery store, furtively looking around to make sure that nobody I knew was around. If I did see someone who had known me "before," I was even prepared to leave my shopping cart and run out the door and drive home, that is how ashamed of myself I was.

And Mom, who is very, very small, was secretly disapproving of my new big size. I think for her it meant I was a failure and a slovenly pig. She would send me magazine articles on diets and exercise, until I told her that it just hurt me too much to receive that advice, and to please stop. I know she meant well, and did it out of love for me.

She couldn't help herself, though, because every once in a while she would send me a little snippet on how one woman mastered her tendency to gain weight by lifting weights three times a week and getting on the StairMaster five times a week.

"That's great for her," I'd think to myself, "but I bet she doesn't come home and have an unstoppable compulsion to scarf down every piece of junk food she can lay her hands on either."
And that was the problem: I couldn't stop eating. I simply didn't know what to do to get a handle on it. I was out of control with food.

It didn't help me either to read little tips in the magazines like "Leave something on your plate at every meal," or "Walk 20 minutes four times a week and lose five pounds a month"
That sure wasn't going to work if I didn't even have down the basic, No. 1, gotta-handle-this-monster - how do I stop taking that first bite of a binge when I don't have any self-control?
I've talked to a lot of overweight people, and I have learned that what matters most in being successful with not giving in to overeating is:

Number one, having a way to deaden or lessen the intensity of food cravings (that is why people on amphetamines, though they are probably suffering from being on a yechy mind-altering drug, can lose weight); and
Number two, a predictable mental response to cravings set up ahead of time, so they can be dealt with successfully as they come up.

Because cravings are going to come up. You MUST have predictable ways to deal with them, each and every time they do.

And - and this is so important - if handled correctly in the first few crucial days, you will be THRILLED to know that those out-of-control cravings will soon leave you for good, if you do not give in to them at all.

If you're always thinking about and craving food, it becomes so easy just to put an end to the agony of temptation, and give in again, no matter how good your intentions are when you start.
But people can lose weight easily if they have that - or can call forth at any time - "Oh, no, thanks, I'm just not hungry" feeling.

Now to the meat of this article: How to GET that "just not hungry" feeling.

I'll have to be brief, but some things I discovered that really, really helped quell the binge monster:

1) Aromatherapy

2) A CD I played all night long that made me feel an astonishing detachment from food the next day

3) A mental "talk to myself" script that let me walk past tempting foods

I'm going to briefly cover each one here.

1. Aromatherapy. It's simple. Use peppermint or orange or banana essential oil fragrances at regular intervals throughout the day to prevent overeating. The exciting thing is: whenever I use it, IT WORKS. I ALWAYS turn away from food, or eat less than I would have.

2. To develop a "take it or leave it" attitude towards food, play a subliminal message audio CD (the only sound you hear is, say, sounds of nature or the ocean, but there are hidden messages underneath that "white noise") all night long (set your player on "Repeat."). Yields amazing benefits.

3. A mental "talk-to-yourself" type script that allows you to face each temptation as it comes up. And that is all dieting is about, is getting past one temptation at a time (gets easier each time, I promise). Your "script" can be a simple one, "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels," or something more complex and emotion-evoking: "I know if I eat this, I'll feel awful about myself, my self-confidence will be destroyed, I'll go to bed tonight feeling fat and wondering what's wrong with me. So I choose not to eat this so I can feel really good about myself and get into those size 9 pants."
So those are the simple tricks I used to get a handle on binge eating. So far I've lost 45 pounds and still losing. I don't miss binging. And I love having clothes that swim around my waist!

How to Not Gain Weight During the Holidays


The holidays are always a challenge. For most of us, an increased focus on eating, drinking, and relaxation almost always leads to a few extra pounds and inches. Make up your mind that this year, the results will be better. It's very easy, with all the excitement and partying to forget just how much you're eating. It's just as easy to put off exercise until after New Years Day.

Here are a few Simple and Easy To Follow Tips that can make this year better. You can maintain your weight and feel much better in the process.

BE AWARE OF INCREASED CALORIE INTAKE
During the holidays, frequent opportunities arise to eat at times at times when we don't normally eat. Our bodies are just not used to dealing with this obstacle.

It's generally believed that "before and after dinner foods", increased portion size, drinks and desserts, will lead the average person to consume up to double their usual calorie intake. That spells trouble.

CONCENTRATE ON THE POSITIVE, NOT THE NEGATIVE
Try to increase your concentration on what you CAN do, not what you Can't.
Depriving yourself of food and drink just doesn't work. It's unenjoyable and a chore. Human nature always rebels against things that are unenjoyable.

GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO INDULGE. SIMPLY MAKE IT IN SMALLER AMOUNTS
You can still have the pumpkin pies (take a smaller portion), the eggnog (one instead of two, two instead of four), a small second helping of dinner instead of the second and third helping. People who have tried these ideas report that it took a little "getting used to" at first, but now consider it to be second nature.

ANY FOOD IS OK TO EAT IF YOU CAN BURN OFF THE CALORIES
All food are made up of something called calories. If you take in more than you burn up, you will gain weight. Unfortunately during the holidays, most of the food choices are high in calories.
This holiday season. JUST DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT. As I said earlier, concentrate on the POSITIVE (the things you can do), not the NEGATIVE (the things you shouldn't)

It's a generally accepted fact that walking is great exercise. It can burn just as many calories as running, biking, rowing, or mountain climbing. Walking just takes a longer amount of time. The last statement may seem like a joke. It's not meant to be. How many average people have the ability or desire to participate in running, biking, etc?

ABOUT WALKING AND METABOLISM
Metabolism is the rate at which your body burns fuel (calories). If you don't exercise much, your body's metabolism slows down. (Your body's way to help you survive)
Walking will increase your metabolism, helping to burn off calories more quickly.
Walking will increase your metabolism, even after you've stopped walking. (A known fact. Check it out.) Increased muscle size will increase your metabolism. Your legs are your largest muscles. Walking is good for your legs. (Hello. Walking is a good thing.)

WALKING MORE CAN HELP YOU NOT GAIN WEIGHT DURING THE HOLIDAYS
Here's a couple of ideas;
Try to walk around the block. If that's too far, how about to the garage and back. Or across the living room, or walk in-place. Don't think of it as a chore. Then you probably won't continue to do it.
Take the stairs once in while if you can.
Park a little further way at the grocery store. Try to get out of the habit of parking as close as you can.
Try to walk outside for 1, 5 or 10 minutes a day. Don't worry about "increasing your time" by a "certain number of minutes each day", a method often preached by fitness professionals. Just feel good that you are doing something as opposed to nothing.

Guranteed Way to Lose Weight


I have been trying to figure how to lose weight for over four years. I'll lose about 10 or fifteen pounds and then gain it back. While trying to lose the weight I never thought about how I was going to keep it off or why I was gaining weight. All I knew is that I was gaining weight and I need to lose it. When I was small I never thought about what size I was or about food. When I was smaller food wasn't even important to me. So how did I get to the place where food became so important to me that I would sabotage my health?

My earliest memory of thinking of food in an emotional way goes back about 10 years ago. I can remember being in high school and my boyfriend and I had broken up and every morning the book store would sell fresh cappuccinos and fresh baked Otis Spunkmeyer sugar cookies. I had them in the past but, I remember this particular day when I more than craved them. It was a feeling of me needing them to comfort me. People always talk about comfort foods like it's a good thing. I think comfort food is a dangerous thing because when was the last ime celery was a comfort food? Comfort food is usually rich, soft or creamy. At the time I did not know that this would start a journey in my life that would be hard to reverse.

Consequently, I gained about 10 pounds that year but, it still wasn't a wake up call. From then on I just ate what I wanted because I didn't realize what I was doing to myself. First of all, no one ever taught me how to deal with my emotions, secondly, I was never taught to not over eat, and thirdly, I've never been taught to eat healthy and to not gain weight. Where I come from, fat babies were great and fat people were normal. People in my family never exercised or went on diets. Ironically, I enlisted into the Air Force Reserves and went off to basic training and I lost all the weight.

Well, I still didn't get it. When I went to basic training I was happy I was losing weight but, I didn't think about keeping it off or leading a life to maintain the weight. Therefore, when I got back home less than three months later I couldn't even fit into the nice little size 5/6 I had bought. I still didn't get the point. I didn't even realize that I had gained 14 or 15 pounds until about two years later and it still was no big deal (to me). To make a long story short the same viscious cycle just kept going on and on.

Unfortunately, I began to devalue you myself. I wasn't only eating to hurt myself. I was drinking alcohol and sleeping around. I was suffering from a lot of trauma and I still am. I grew up without a father and I learned to except it but, than I fell in love and fell out of love and the trauma just came all over again. What happens when someone goes through all these changes is they get lost in it all. I lost myself and than I began hating myself and now that's where I'm left. If could truly love myself, I wouldn't abuse myself like this. I have two children and they were premies so they are still underweight because they don't like to eat but, I still wouldn't allow them to just sit around and eat junk food all day. It would ruin their teeth, possibly cause diabetes, and worst of all they could end up like me. I won't allow this because I love them so why am allowing this for myself? I couldn't love myself. You don't hurt people you love if you can control it. Humans might think just because we abuse food, drugs and alcohol it doesn't mean we don't love ourselves but, that's exactly what it is. We're not on the outside looking in.

If a man was going to lose his wife and he knew with all his heart he wanted to keep here he would do everything he could to make that happen in a healthy way. If we loved ourselves the way we should we would do everything in our power to secure our health and well being. If we truly loved ourselves we wouldn't let food control us. If we really want to lose the weight it's going to have to start with loving ourselves because if we don't we might lose the weight but, we might gain it back.

The more we love ourselves the more we will have a healthy relationship with the things (food) and people will love. I'm nowhere near where I need to be but, now that I know what I need to do to get there and stay there I believe I can make it. If anyone wants to lose weight, they need to figure out what made them this way. They need to find the root cause. They need to figure out the reason they're eating. You can go on a diet anytime but, if you don't know when you're more vulnerable to eat than you will fail. If you don't know what makes you gain weight than you won't know how to lose weight. Weight loss is a long journey and it's more than being skinny and pretty. Weight gain is more than being fat and lazy. This is only part 1 of my journey.

Tips for College Students to Lose Weight

When we start a new school year, most of us always put on a few unwanted pounds. These extra pounds keep adding up and somehow end up as the inevitable Freshman 15. Do your body a favor this new school year and keep those unwanted pounds away. Take the Freshman 15 Challenge and stay healthy.

The Most Important Meal of the Day - Breakfast should never be ignored. No matter how much time you think you don't have, make time for a sensible breakfast. It will take no more than five minutes to prepare a glass of juice, wheat toast, apple slices and a soft boiled egg. Skipping breakfast is a sure set-up for blind over-indulgence at the first opportunity.

Make Healthy Food Choices - You should do your best to prepare your own meals. Eating out at fast food restaurants can case several problems including extra weight. you need to be in complete control of everything that goes into your mouth. Fresh and simple foods are your best bet if you want to intake the best nutrients without a lot of unnecessary fat and calories. Here are some excellent choices when deciding on a snack..
* A piece of fruit
* Bean salad
* Low-Fat Cheese and a few Triscuit® 100% Whole Wheat Crackers
* A mixed fruit smoothie
* A mixed fruit and vegetable smoothie
* Two graham cracker squares with peanut butter or apple slices
* Sandwich on rye, 100% whole wheat, pumpernickle...
- on anything but white bread - and a salad

Any of these ideas and many more are all suitable as a quick and healthful snack and/or as a lunch-time meal. If you cannot prepare your own daytime meals you should always make choices that are on the right side of healthy.

Do not choose the greasy fried versions of anything, shun the sauces, go easy on the dressings and pretend the processed foods do not exist.

Look for the green and the naturally fresh choices in front of you. If your options are few, oh well, just get a double portion of the good stuff to make yourself a meal.

Night Time is Not the Right Time for Snacks - Try as hard as you can to stop eating several hours before you go to bed at night. But... if you must snack, do your body a favor and choose very wisely. If you crave ice cream at night, put a cup of low-fat pudding in the freezer and snack on that. Or frozen grapes. If you are craving something crunchy and salty, skip the chips and go instead for a couple of cups of air-popped popcorn, or whole wheat baked crackers. Say no to cake, cookies, candy and all of the ugly stuff. If you do succumb to the lures of the late-night advertisements, do not despair.
